They stayed physically active, maintained lasting friendships and ate mostly plant-based meals, among other things. But can their fountain-of-youth promise be transplanted to one of the poorest neighborhoods in one of the densest cities in the United States? Voter after voter who greeted Mr. Salaam on Wednesday said they recognized him as one of the five Black and Latino men exonerated in 2002 in the rape and assault of a female jogger in Central Park in 1989. “I think this election is largely about change,” Mr. Salaam, 49, said. In both Harlem and East New York, voters went from supporting self-described socialists to backing moderate Democrats.

Twenty years ago, during the Bloomberg administration, Chancellor Joel Klein ushered in the era of balanced literacy at city schools, until a lack of progress led him to pilot other approaches. Years later, another chancellor, Carmen Fariña, a believer in independent reading time and having students choose their own books, again encouraged schools to adopt those strategies. Mr. Banks, and the mayor, Eric Adams, who has dyslexia, has said reading would be one of the top priorities for the administration. Already, Mr. Banks has required schools to adopt phonics programs and opened several new programs for students with dyslexia. Teacher training on the new programs will begin this week and continue over the summer, and coaching will continue during the school year.

The boyfriend of a 22-year-old woman found dismembered, with her body parts stuffed into two suitcases, in her New York City apartment has been arrested in her grisly death. Justin Williams, 24, was arrested Monday and arraigned on indictment charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced. Johnson went home after work on Aug. 21 and “and never exited the apartment again,” Gonzalez said. He then allegedly dismembered her body and concealed the remains in the two suitcases. Williams allegedly fled the apartment following a wellness check by building personnel who became concerned after they didn’t see Johnson for some time.

A wellness check for a 22-year-old woman in New York City reportedly led to a grisly discovery: blood, human remains and body parts stuffed into suitcases, police said. The New York City Police Department was called to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Linwood Street in East New York around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to conduct the check. When officers arrived to the woman’s sixth-floor apartment, they found two suitcases containing human remains, police said. However, it’s not clear if the victim’s entire body was accounted for. It’s also not clear if the remains belong to the woman subject of the wellness check.
